Applicants vs. Recruits is a twist and form of tribe division from Survivor Fan Characters 9.

Survivor Fan Characters 9[]
The twist was first revealed during the season's preview, where Jeff Probst announced that ten applicants would be taking on ten recruits. The applicants were ten reader-created fan characters who initially made up the Carbo tribe, wile the recruits were ten author-created fan characters who initially made up the Amatri tribe.
The twist did not last long into the season, as almost immediately after arriving, Jeff announced to the players that the tribe they had been assigned to wasn't actually their official tribe. They were then instructed to draw from a small sack that they were given prior to the game, which contained either a black or white stone. Those who drew the white stone would form the Carbo tribe, while those who drew the black stone would form the Amatri tribe. The castaways were seemingly unaware of the existence of their initial tribal division.
In spite of the twist's extremely short lifespan, future seasons would see the inclusion of both author and user-created fan characters far more frequently, as the former had become largely obsolete as of the series' fourth season.
